2003 Research (continued from p.2)
Methodology: For the past 2 years, we have treated 20-tree blocks of plot trees with systemic fungicides via trunk microinjection [containing the fungicides tebuconizole and benzimidazole]. Trunk injections were performed in late June and early July. Control trees received no injection treatments. Linear canker development in existing cankers and in newly formed cankers were measured at the end of September. In addition to microinjection trials with our plot trees, we were able to treat key pollination trees in Massachusetts. Dr. Charlotte Zampini of Framingham State College coordinated the injections of the MA Chapter American chestnut trees.
Results: Measurements of the treated trees demonstrated significant suppression of canker enlargement on both established and newly formed cankers. Cankers girdled the stems on 100% of the untreated control trees. Canker development on pollination trees that were injected in 2003 will be re-evaluated in spring 2004 when the pollination trees emerge from dormancy.
