| Comments: | Unknown if tree has blight. There are some vertical scars and suckers about 20' up on the trunk as it approaches the crown. Otherwise the tree seems in perfect health. A minimum of 50 husks were quickly counted below the tree this year: the ones open all had nuts. The tree was discovered last autumn by the presence of fresh husks and nuts on ground. There a a good number of 10' American Chestnuts growing in the downhill shadow of this tree, some with evidence of resprouting, some without. Another perfectly healthy 35' tall American Chestnut (~6"DBH) was found 0.25 m away, but no husks were found. Tree is on MA Fish & Wildlife land, for whom I work, and collection/propgation shouldn't be a problem. I'd be happy to arrange a showing of this tree if there's interest. |
