Comments: this tree is on public land, as far as i know. i really can't tell whether this is an american chestnut or some kind of hybrid, because it shows some characteristics of both american and others, but the leaves are long and pretty straight, they taper at the stem and aren't thick, waxy, or hairy on the undersides like the chinese chestnuts are described. it's got 2 large (maybe 7 inches in diameter) trunks and 2 skinny ones (maybe a couple of inches in diameter) all forking at the ground. i didn't see a stump underneath, but i didn't dig or anything. It looks very healthy and only has a few burrs on it, which makes me think it can't be an american, but anything's possible. i'll mail leaves to the westborough address.
